Sepaton Unveils Backup ROBO Cop

Sepaton, Inc. is reaching out from its backup stronghold in enterprise data centers to the ROBOs (remote office/branch offices), with three new systems that address what the company calls the 'last 30 percent of unprotected enterprise data'. Starting with 10 or 20TB usable capacity options in a 2u form factor, the S2100-DS3 Series 1000, 2000 and 2000e can deliver backup speeds of up to 1500 MB/sec, and performance optimization features include automated load-balancing of backup, restore, deduplication and replication for continuous, maximum performance, as well as support for Symantec NetBackup OpenStorage (OST) on 10 Gb Ethernet concurrently with Fibre Channel tape emulation.

Using a hub-and-spoke approach, it believes the new offerings address the specialized needs of remote offices, including small physical spaces, low WAN bandwidth and limited IT support on site. Sepaton says set-and-forget technology that provides remote monitoring and management of the data protection process is essential, using the same business rules and SLAs (service level agreements) as corporate.

In January the company updated its software (version 6.0) and doubled performance, which will feature prominently in the new DS3 series, says Sepaton. A typical customer is looking to bring between 6 to 30 remote office locations into their data protection umbrella.

Over half of its new system sales in 2010 were replicated sites and this trend is accelerating in 2011, Sepaton says, both from existing customers as well as from new prospects doing data-center consolidation and and looking at how to protect their remote offices. The third major opportunity is tape replacement at large enterprises using tape for remote backup.

Deni Connor, founding analyst, Storage Strategies NOW, says the DS3 compares very favorably to the Data Domain DD140 Remote Office Appliance. "With the DS3 Series 1000 and 2000, Sepaton has taken into consideration the needs of distributed enterprises - the DS3 appliance allows often-forgotten branch and remote offices to replicate deduplicated data to the centralized data center."
