IT Automation: The Shopping Spree Continues

Only a few days after BMC purchased RealOps to bulk up its IT process automation offering, Hewlett-Packard announced today that it will buy Opsware for a whopping $1.45 billion. Opsware, which snapped up RealOps rival iConclude earlier this year, provides network and server configuration management software and is poised to make a big push into data center automation.

While BMC and HP are leading the automation charge, look for other large software makers, including CA, to also jump into this space. The big question for IT will be how quickly these vendors can integrate recent acquisitions into their current offerings, while minimizing the headaches involved in deploying and operating traditionally complex and expensive IT process automation suites.
