IDC: Networked Storage Up

Quarterly figures from International Data Corp. portray good growth in networked disk storage, despite a small increase in the overall disk storage market -- and disappointing performance by individual vendors (see IDC Storage Tracker Released).

For the fourth quarter of 2004, factory revenues from disks used in external storage gear were $3.8 billion, IDC reports. That's just 1 percent over last year's fourth-quarter revenue figure.

Total factory revenues for disk storage systems, including internal server storage as well as external gear, was $5.8 billion in the fourth quarter, up 1.8 percent year-over-year.

Figure 1:

Despite so-so overall figures, IDC analysts see evidence of momentum in networked disk storage, which includes SAN and NAS. That segment showed $2.4 billion in factory revenues in the fourth quarter, up 11.6 percent year-over-year. Of that, $1.9 billion
came from SAN systems, including iSCSI products (which broke $100 million in revenue for all of 2004, according to IDC); and $236 million came from NAS. SAN-based disk storage systems grew 10.9 percent year-over-year in the fourth quarter, and NAS systems grew 14.7 percent.
