Design Best Practice

Question:I am looking for information/best practice on the design of mission-critical facilities. Specifically, should a single facility be hardened to a wind speed for the weather risk in the area (for example, a tornado)? Or would a better strategy be to design a primary facility and a backup facility? If this strategy were chosen, could the structural design wind speed be reduced for each of the two structures? (Assuming the facilities are located 60 miles from one another.) It would follow that the probability of a weather event hitting both at the same time is small. Is there a source for this type of information?

Answer: It depends. Lets split the question apart:

  • 1) Where is the proposed data center? Is it in an area that has historical issues with tornadoes? There is publicly available information. If you are unsure, you can check with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
