Another Run at Secure Storage

Although the merging of security and data has been a common premise for storage deals this year, customers are still unconvinced the integrated offerings deliver what they need.

In the latest deal, today firewall appliance vendor SonicWall jumped into the data protection space bought up continuous data protection (CDP) startup Lasso Logic, as expected. (See SonicWall Lassos enKoo and Firewall Vendor Hopes to Lasso CDP.) The deal is built on the same premise as the Symantec-Veritas acquisition, but on a much smaller scale. (See Symantec & Veritas: It's a Deal). While Symantec paid over $13 billion for Veritas, SonicWall paid less than $20 million for Lasso and the assets of remote access startup enKoo. SonicWall and Lasso Logic products target SMBs rather than the enterprise. (See Lasso Joins CDP Roundup.)

SonicWall president Matthew Medeiros says the goal is to provide data protection, security, and remote access services in one system. Customers want to manage backup and remote access through the same management console,” he says. “That’s what we will be able to provide over time.”

That will take awhile in the case of backup and restore capabilities. At the onset, SonicWall will continue to sell Lasso CDP as a separate appliance with integration probably coming late next year.

Larger security-storage acquisitions have gotten off to slow starts. Symantec had disappointing sales of its storage and security products in the first full quarter with combined operations. (See An Off Quarter for Symantec.) And Network Appliance hasn't seen the quick acceleration in sales of Decru encryption devices forecast after last June's $272 million acquisition.
