A major selling point for vendors with a CMDB is how easily it integrates with their own management products. If a strong federation standard emerges, how will they distinguish themselves?

The customer problems we want to solve aren't low-level issues of how to wire the data together; it's higher-value problems. This standard is to avoid reinventing the wheel every time someone wants to pull data from a repository.

Vendors will compete on the quality of implementation, the value-add built on top of the federated data. Just because there's a standard with a common interface, there won't be exact clones of products. To the extent that people can manage a greater set of data and take advantage with more automated processes, that's where we'll see the competition.
