A centrally managed security service that enables individual users and small businesses to lock down their wireless networks was launched Thursday.

The service, called SecureMyWiFi, is being offered by WiTopia.Net, which is a division of wireless security vendor Full Mesh Networks. The company said in a statement that it is using enterprise-grade security based on the 802.11i standard and RADIUS server authentication.

In addition, the service encrypts data using WPA2, according to the company's Web site.

"Many people take their work laptops home, or to a wireless hotspot, and beam, not only personal, but company proprietary, information through the air with no security whatsoever," Bill Bullock, WiTopia.Net's co-founder said in a statement. "They're exposing not only their company, but themselves, to huge liability."

The service requires no special hardware or software, according to the company. It is available now from the company's Web site at an introductory price of $29 per month. The Web site also said the company offers a "personal VPN" service for use on public networks such as wireless hotspots.
