Symantec Offers Disaster Recovery as a Service

Backup services aren't new, several companies have been offering online backup for small and midsize businesses for years. The real question is if Symantec can offer this service at a price attractive enough to get over customer paranoia about having their data off-site and in the hands of others. With Symantec's huge reach into the SMB market, it will have a better chance than many of the small companies that have been offering online backup and disaster recovery.

Security vendor Symantec launched its software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform this week with a beta version of its first deliverable, a data-backup and -recovery offering.

The Symantec Protection Network-Online Backup Service gives companies, particularly small and midsize firms, browser-based business data backup and recovery. In the event of a system outage or even a catastrophic disaster, users of the subscription-based Symantec service will be able to access files quickly and easily.
