HP, Microsoft and SAP Team On Duet Appliance

Appliances are becoming a popular form factor for middleware in categories ranging from XML transformation to RFID management. This is in part an attempt to remove some complexity from SOA, though an application like Duet will never be entirely plug-and-play: Although it presents an intuitive, Microsoft Office-based interface for end users, it requires configuration and integration from IT. The appliance will be most useful to large organizations that make enough use of Duet to run it on one or more dedicated servers.

Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft and SAP are eager to prove that, at least in the case of their Duet collaboration, three is anything but a crowd.

The trio introduced a new appliance this week that aims to make it simpler for employees to tap into both SAP business processes and Microsoft Office data.
