Vendor politics and the complexity of the proposed standard will likely prevent the completion of an open protocol in the near future.

The debate has resurfaced, both in the IETF's CAPWAP (control and provisioning of wireless access points) working group and at major system vendors. Airespace, Aruba, Cisco, D-Link, Netgear and Trapeze Networks all are working to extend the AP-to-controller connection across multiple systems, but with WLAN switch architectures so disparate, it'll be some time before we see an open standard. That's a shame, because without a standard, users will continue to be locked in to a single vendor for both APs and controllers.
