Skype Hype?

Will this latest VoIP communication method catch on?

To find out more, I donned my headset and installed Skype on my own PC. Although the lime green icon made an ugly dent on my desktop, the program was easy to install and use. With the built-in tool that alerts other users, I quickly established a three-way conversation with two fellow editors on the wonders of VoIP without a phone. But when I "skyped" some friends from coast to coast, network latency set in, my interest wandered--and so did my friends.

If Skype can maintain call quality as volume rises, it could be a killer app in the short run. In the long run, though, Skype will tail off when VoIP becomes a dominant force in voice communications.
