Skype, Fiberlink To Target Mobile Enterprise VoIP Market

Skype Technologies is teaming up with Fiberlink Communications Corp. to target Fiberlink's 800,000-strong enterprise mobile user base.

Announced Wednesday, Fiberlink said it will bundle Skype's peer-to-peer Internet telephony service with Fiberlink's Extend360 mobile access software. The Skype service will be offered as a value-added feature to Fiberlink's offering.

The firms said security requirements of mobile enterprise customers are an important feature that will be addressed in the new offering. "IT professionals and others in the industry are concerned about the security implications of using applications like IM and Skype," said Fiberlink's chief marketing officer William Wagner in a statement. "Extend360 reduces those concerns and puts control back in the hands of IT."

Skype's co-founder and chief executive officer Niklas Zennstrom, said Skype customers are increasingly using the inexpensive service for business. He indicated that the VoIP company will enter into additional strategic relationships like the deal with Fiberlink.
