Nokia Completes Fast Data Call Using WiMAX Technology

Nokia announced Tuesday that it has completed a data call in its WiMAX development program as the cell phone and infrastructure manufacturer examines the nomadic and portable mobility features of its WiMAX (802.16e) development program.

“This is an important step in our WiMAX development work, and we are very encouraged by the results,” said Nokia’s Markku Hollstrom in a statement. He is the firm’s general manager, broadband wireless business program, networks.

A founding member of the WiMAX Forum, Nokia dropped out of the Forum briefly in the spring of 2004, only to return and promote the technology aggressively.

The company said it will conduct WiMAX trials in 2006. The successful data call was made between computing and baseband modules at Nokia’s research and development center in Germany. The data call was carried out on a high-speed pre-product test platform, the firm said.
