Michael Powell Resigns From FCC
FCC Chairman Michael Powell leaves the telecom industry better than he found it, having helped foster quick growth in broadband, VoIP and wireless services.

Likewise, the FCC has encouraged the nationwide rollout of commercial VoIP services by exempting them from telco regulations. To make way for new wireless services, Powell has advocated a more liberal allocation of the unlicensed radio spectrum to commercial providers, though this could lead to interference problems.
Next up for the FCC: an overhaul of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which quickly became outdated as new services emerged. Powell preferred to take a slow approach to such sweeping legislative matters; his successor will have four years to make a mark.
