Forgotten Signals

I enjoyed Frank Bulk's blog "VeriSign Verifies Dual-Mode Voice". Bulk rightly points to the two major modes of interoperability--SS7 (and IS-41) and SIP--necessary for seamless fixed-mobile convergence. The carrier signalling component is often misunderstood and forgotten, though I was cheering in 2001 when VeriSign acquired SS7 services company Illuminet. It's nice to see that acquisition bear IMS-style fruit and to acknowledge that device-centric solutions like UMA and SCCAN present interoperability challenges.
