Worldwide IPTV service revenue will skyrocket to over $44 billion in 2009, and the number of IPTV subscribers worldwide will grow to 53.7 million by that year, according to a new report by Infonetics Research.

The report found that currently, DSL providers account for the bulk of service revenue, but over the next few years, cable broadband providers will also migrate to all-IP triple-play services.

Service providers, already making sizable investments in IPTV, will significantly increase their investments, the report claims. It found that in 2004, service providers worldwide spent $304 million on IPTV-related services infrastructure. That spending will grow to almost $4.5 billion in 2009 as providers look to IPTV services as a way to raise the average revenue per unit (ARPU) from a near-saturated broadband subscriber base, it concludes.

The report also found that IPTV services infrastructure capital expenses will grow 1,377%, from $304 million today to close to $4.5 billion by 2009, and the number of IPTV subscribers in North America will increase 12,985% between 2004 and 2009.
