Vendors are pitching this superspeed technology mainly to home users who need it least. Home WLANs are predominantly used to share a 1- to 3-Mbps Internet connection, and 802.11b meets that need with bandwidth to spare. True, the new stuff will speed up file transfers between home computers--but how many home users really care?
Whether you're an enterprise IT administrator or a home LAN builder, your best bet is to wait for standards-based fast-WLAN technologies. By then, there should also be plenty of 400-horsepower sports sedans to test drive.
