Avaya Inc. has yesterday that its IP telephony line shipments have topped seven million, marking a milestone in its VoIP business. The company also announced that its IP line shipments have overtaken its traditional telephony sales for the first time.

Avaya cites Synergy Research Group studies that say Avaya is the global leader in IP telephony in the first quarter of this year with a 21% market share, a position it has held for six consecutive quarters.

VoIP overall is growing at a rate of 70% per year, according to Synergy Research. Eight percent of the 423 enterprise telephony lines shipped last year were IP. Synergy expects the IP telephony market to quadruple by 2007.

"Businesses are beginning to understand the true value of IP telephony lies in the integration of communications applications and business applications," Avaya chairman and CEO Don Peterson said in a statement. "We call this Intelligent Communications, and it is leading to a redefinition of business processes while creating new business models and greater customer satisfaction."

The recipient of Avaya's seven millionth line was India's ING Vysya Bank, which will use IP telephony technology to deliver 24-hour telephone banking to its customers.
