Altiris Takes Tonic To Provide Expanded Offerings

Altiris has acquired Tonic Software, a Web application
management software vendor. The acquisition will allow Altiris to offer customers enhanced server monitoring and diagnostics capabilities, expanding its business in providing IT lifecycle management for both servers
and clients. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

The Tonic technology complements Altiris' current server monitoring product by extending monitoring and diagnostic capabilities for heterogeneous environments. Greg Butterfield, Altiris president and CEO, noted in a statement that Tonic's technology helps Altiris identify, resolve and prevent software application problems before they affect end users and business operations. The deal gives Altiris its first application-aware solution for managing J2EE and .NET Web environments.

"Dynamic server provisioning is key to organizations
as they move toward a real time infrastructure," Butterfield said. "Server monitoring is
the enabling technology and the foundation to the dynamic server provisioning model. This acquisition improves our competitive advantage in this area."

The technology will be integrated into the current Altiris server management offerings and will provide a standalone monitoring solution for midsize and enterprise customers.
