Alcatel confirmed its dominance in the digital subscriber line equipment market with the announcement yesterday that it has shipped 70 million DSL lines worldwide, an increase of 40% over the 50 million it had shipped by last year.

According to Alcatel, its market leadership is largely based on the success of its Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) solutions. Designed specifically as a triple-play platform, the ISAM line allows providers to deploy a variety of access technologies to deliver a wide range of services over their broadband infrastructures.

Alcatel has had considerable global success the ISAM line, leveraging its substantial global channel operations to attract some 35 major providers in Asia, North America and Europe. The company has been particularly successful in China, where China Telecom, China Netcom and Chunghwa Telecom have all invested in ISAM products to support their triple play initiatives.

In Europe, Telecom Italia has selected Alcatel technology for its migration from an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network to IP and to support planned Internet television (IPTV) services. On Monday, T-Online selected Alcatel's ISAM products to develop Ya.com's triple play capability.

Alcatel's ISAM customers in the America's include Telefonica Brazil, SBC, BellSouth and Telus.
