SAN FRANCISCO -- Riverbed Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: RVBD), the performance leader in wide-area data services (WDS), announced today that more than 2000 enterprises, service providers and government organizations had selected Riverbed's SteelheadR WDS appliances. This increase in customers represents 300 percent growth since January 2006, when Riverbed announced its 500th customer.

Based on the strength of Riverbed's market-leading WDS technology, the business critical need for solutions that overcome the limitations of the WAN, and deep networking expertise, the company has been able to win 1,500 new customers in 15 months with very high levels of customer satisfaction.

In a survey conducted in March 2007, Riverbed's customers described the reasons why they selected the company's Steelhead appliances. Over 500 customers responded, representing 435 organizations. The top three reasons that respondents chose Riverbed over the competition were that the Steelhead appliances deliver faster and better performance, are easier to deploy and manage and offer broader support for application acceleration. Other considerations were pre-sales and support, range of features, scalability, product stability and Riverbed's position as the market leader. One hundred thirty organizations chose Riverbed's Steelhead appliances over Cisco's WAAS offerings, while 148 organizations selected Riverbed's Steelhead appliances over Juniper's WX or WXC appliances.

Riverbed's customer base of over 2,000 includes companies in the financial services, publishing, aerospace, pharmaceutical, insurance, energy, semiconductor, engineering, local and national governments, manufacturing, and architecture markets. Customers range in size from small organizations with only two or three offices to some of the world's largest enterprises with hundreds or even thousands of offices. Recent customer wins include:Hearst Corporation; Everbrite; Skidmore Owings & Merrill, LLP; Plastipak Packaging; Ropes and Gray; and BBRail.

"Riverbed provided Plastipak Packaging with a solution that enabled us to consolidate our 11 Microsoft Exchange email servers into one manageable, centralized server without compromising application performance and user productivity," said Joe Lalik, technical services director at Plastipak Packaging, Inc. "With the Steelhead appliances deployed, our user community doesn't even know that their email server is no longer in the building. We have since begun centralizing our file servers in the same fashion. The Steelhead appliances were easy to deploy and easy to manage, giving us an extremely fast ROI.""Riverbed got to 2000 customers faster than most get to 200. Even more impressive is that they are adding more functionality and entering new market segments," said Steve Duplessie, founder and senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. "Adding the ability to accelerate secure SSL is nothing short of brilliant."
