MIPS And Software Partners Offer Single Core VoIP

SAN JOSE, Calif. — MPU core vendor MIPS Technologies Inc. is jointly marketing with communications software and design services providers D2 Technologies, HelloSoft, RADVISION and Trinity Convergence a single core offering for multi-channel VoIP applications, including VoIP residential gateways, IP phones, VoWLAN (Voice over Wireless LAN) phones and terminal adapters.

Traditionally, VoIP residential gateways, terminal adapters and IP phones have used — a host CPU to run the operating system and protocols, and a dedicated VoIP DSP for the codecs and other components — requiring separate development teams, using different toolsets.

Now, said the companies, with the MIPS32 24Kc core teamed with software and services from D2 Technologies, HelloSoft, RADVISION and Trinity Convergence users get all that functionality on a single core.

The companies claim that the core along with partner software offers more than enough performance to eliminate the DSP and subsume VoIP functionality into the host CPU, including four or more voice channels, while providing additional headroom for new features and services, the companies claim.

D2 Technologies Inc., offers its vPort "soft DSP" software for running voice processing in software instead of a DSP; HelloSoft, offers a reference design for CPE devices; RADVISION provides tools, platforms and professional services for the development of voice and video communication products; while Trinity Convergence offers its VeriCall Edge VoIP development software.
