Source-Side Deduplication: Symantec: Page 2 of 2

Replication to a remote facility for Symantec is just another copy job within the software that happens to be dedupe aware, leveraging NetBackup's existing ability to make multiple copies of a back-up job. Of course the advantage is this is done all through the same software application and it is aware of where each of the copies are. It also means that the disk target can be from almost any supplier.

Flexibility is a key ingredient of the Symantec deduplication offering. Integration into existing backup processes can be achieved by either using the Symantec client side agents, leveraging the Symantec deduplicating media servers or by leveraging a hardware based solution that takes advantage of Symantec's OST. Back-up challenges come in different sizes, having multiple methods to address those challenges can be ideal.

Disclosure: Symantec's has engaged and is presently engaged in projects with Storage Switzerland where George Crump's is the lead analyst.
