SSD, of course, is also a big subject. The technology is now priced to where it has moved beyond being the exclusive use of the high-performance fringe and more for moderate performance needs. If you have not looked at SSD pricing lately, I encourage you to do so. We used to talk about 300 mechanical drives focused on performance being the target for cost effectively using SSD vs. Mechanical drives. The price point of SSD has reached the point where if you have a LUN with 20 to 30 drives allocated to it for performance reasons, SSD may be the more cost-effective alternative, especially when you factor in the power and cooling savings.

We also heard from more than one vendor getting ready to provide a primary storage system with a complete software compliment based solely on SSD. I stand by my prediction that Fibre drives may be gone from primary storage in five years. SAS will take over first and then eventually all SSD.

That's the quick review and the points that stuck with me the most. I'm sure I'm missing something, which I'll cover next week.
