REDMOND, Wash. -- Advanced Digital Information Corporation(NASDAQ: ADIC), the leader in Intelligent Storage solutions for the open systems market, today announced upgrades to its Scalar i500 intelligent midrange tape library that make it easier and more cost effective for end users to provide secure management and monitoring of their midrange backup process. The award winning Scalar i500 recently announced record product shipments, reaching the 2,000-unit mark in its first 4 months ofavailability.

"The Scalar i500 was designed to make midrange backup faster, more reliable and easier to manage by providing a scalable physical design and an integrated library management software the iLayer," said Eric Brodersen, ADIC Vice President, Storage Products. "This design allows us to increase functionality over time by incorporating new innovative features. In this release, we have increased the value the Scalar i500 offers by increasing overall diagnostic functionality and making it easier to manage remotely, both very important features for any distributed data protection environment."

Several of the new Scalar i500 integral software features are specifically designed for enhanced operation in distributed environments. Multiple remote users can securely access library partitions to provide greater ROI. An integrated firewall protects the library's network ports from unauthorized access for high security operation. Enhanced monitoring functions provide remote confirmation of system alignment and mailbox status. In addition, drive firmware upgrades can now be made directly to the library from remote locations, saving users management time.

Additional Scalar i500 upgrade features include support for 4 Gb LTO Fibre Channel drives, enhanced drive test procedures, expanded library diagnostics, drive serial number virtualization, and compliance with the European Union's Restriction of Hazardous Substance (ROHS) directive.
