5:40 PM -- In the tale of CBS Newss storage makeover lies a lesson for storage vendors. (See CBS News Ices Tape.)

Just because an organization is large, tech savvy, and can afford to spend millions of dollars on storage, doesn’t mean its IT people have a high tolerance for wasting time rigging up Fibre Channel.

CBS News's Frank Governale makes it clear he wants his networked storage as easy as possible to set up and run, even when it’s a big, honking, feature-rich box like the Avid Unity ISIS. And that’s probably true of administrators in other digital media organizations as well as other storage-intensive verticals such as healthcare and life sciences where the last area of technology they want to grapple with is their storage.

As they say in the TV business, if you don't like something you can always change the channel. We say that, too, in the storage business -- especially when the channel is Fibre.
