Legato Upgrades Windows Storage Management App

Legato Software, now part of storage giant EMC, on Thursday unveiled an updated Windows-based hierarchical storage management application that automatically moves infrequently-accessed data to less expensive storage systems.

Dubbed DiskXtender 2000 version 5.5, the software transparently maintains access to the data by users and the pertinent applications. The goal, said Legato, is to let businesses reduce storage costs -- shifting older data, for instance, from expensive arrays to more cost-effective tape -- without requiring IT intervention.

DiskXtender (DX) 2000 5.5 features improved integration and support for IBM Tivoli TSM and StorageTek ACSLS 7.0, and adds new support for a variety of tape, DVD, and DVD-R devices from the likes of ADIC, HP, Kubota, Panasonic, Qualstar, Seagate, and Sony.

The update also boosts DX 2000 5.5's integration with EMC's Centera Content Addressed Storage (CAS) -- EMC's compliance appliance -- to prevent files being modified or deleted, and provides more specific data retention policies that can spell out compliance requirements on multiple data sets on the same physical Windows server.

DX 2000 5.5, which is available now, runs on the Windows NT and Windows 2000 operating systems.
