Altiris Tries Free-to-Own Software Virtualization

Altiris is turning to developers and the open-source community to dominate the software virtualization market. The company recently released the API for its SVS (Software Virtualization Solution) client, which virtualizes applications on the desktop to simplify provisioning and deprovisioning. Earlier this year, Altiris made SVS freely available to individual users.

Trinket, an open-source project that exercises the SVS API, also provides SVS users with basic management of virtualized apps. End users can activate, deactivate and reset applications without having to call the helpdesk--a feature bound to appeal to IT admins. For more on SVS, see "Escape DLL Hell". --Bruce Boardman, [email protected]
