Wal-Mart Rolls Back Prices on Notebook PCs

Clearly, the Wal-Mart PCs are not an enterprise play. Although they include a one-year warranty, it's hard to imagine an IT manager standing in line for customer service behind the guy who wants to return his half-eaten bag of pork rinds. And of course, these notebooks aren't the first computers on Wal-Mart's shelves. The retail giant has been offering sub-$300 desktops loaded with Linux for several months now.

Still, the incredibly low price of the Wal-Mart machines should make IT administrators less tolerant of PC vendors that demand $1,500 to $2,000 for notebooks, even when bought in volume. It's time to sit down with those vendors and renegotiate. Just tell 'em Sam Walton sent you.
