Voltaire Expands InfiniBand Roster

Startup Voltaire Inc. has taken the wraps off a 96-port InfiniBand switch, the ISR 9096, in a bid to cover a broader scope of the supercomputing market and extend InfiniBand's popularity in other markets, such as storage networking (see Voltaire Intros 96-Port InfiniBand Switch).

Still an emerging technology, InfiniBand has found its niche in high-performance computing. But with its low latency and high bandwidth, the technology has long been seen by some industry experts as ideal for regular data center applications and storage interconnects as well.

However, most organizations still find that Fiber Channel is more than adequate for their storage needs, and InfiniBand has so far been consigned to supercomputing clusters. It is no coincidence that Voltaire launched its switch at the supercomputing industry's annual bash, the SC2004 conference in Pittsburgh this week.
