Vendors Strike SIM Note

As users wrestle with regulatory compliance, a number of vendors are touting a software technology called Security Information Management (SIM) to meet the ongoing demands of Sarbanes-Oxley, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and other rules.

Startup netForensics Inc., for instance, has overhauled its flagship nFX Open Security product, making it a typical SIM offering. nFX draws data from a range of devices, such as servers, firewalls, and intrusion-and-detection systems. This includes information on who has accessed the devices as well as other authorization data (see netForensics Manages Security Info).

Diana Kelley, senior analyst at Burton Group, says users are increasingly turning to this type of software to bring key compliance data into one location. The desire to bring together a lot of information from a number of devices is growing,” she says.
