SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SUNW), the creator of SolarisTM, and Greenplum announced today that Smart Communications Inc. (SMART), the Philippines' leading wireless service provider, has selected the data warehouse appliance solution offered by the two companies based on its demonstrated superior performance. The Sun Data Warehouse Appliance, powered by Sun and Greenplum, is built on open source software-the SolarisTM 10 Operating System (OS) and PostgreSQL-and deliver two orders of magnitude better price-performance over competitive products.

"We are constantly looking for ways to better understand our customers so that we can support our subscribers' varying needs, and roll-out new and compelling services," said Mr. Alexander G. Seminiano, department head Convergent Platforms Group, Smart Communications. "The sheer amount of data involved in supporting more than 22 million subscribers generating an average of 700 million text messages per day has always been the key challenge in obtaining deeper insight. The Data Warehouse Appliance by Sun and Greenplum should provide unprecedented performance and scale, enabling us to better understand our customers and their needs."

This breakthrough solution combines the Sun FireTM X4500 data server powered by Dual-Core AMD OpteronTM processors with Greenplum's massively parallel distribution of PostgreSQL, Greenplum Database, in a single turnkey appliance capable of analyzing hundreds of terabytes of business data at a better price-performance than virtually any product on the market. The system is powered by the Solaris 10 OS, taking full advantage of Solaris ZFS, the world's most advanced file system. Solaris ZFS offers a dramatic advance in file management with an innovative approach to data integrity, tremendous ease of administration and a welcome integration of file system and volume management capabilities.

"Smart's adoption of the Sun Data Warehouse Appliance enables a new level of high-speed-business intelligence," said Lionel Lim, president, Asia South, Sun Microsystems. "We are proud that our Sun Fire X4500 is the hardware backbone of this solution. Smart can now generate data on the fly to make well-informed business decisions in a fast and scalable IT environment that offers investment protection."
