Correcting & Replacing

5:45 PM -- No sooner does a press release hit the wires these days than it's snatched away by virtual hands. In a testament to the failure of collaborative effort in most organizations, we get a public statement "CORRECTING AND REPLACING" the original one.

Today, for instance, Alacritech Inc. issued a release at 8:00 AM about one Barry X Lynn, who says, "Alacritech will play a key role in achieving my passion." You see, Lynn is taking time from lots of other important jobs to sit on the board. One of these is director at Shoreline Venture Management, described thus:

Shoreline Venture Management, LLC, is a venture capital firm based in the San Francisco Bay Area... The company's portfolio includes Alacritech Inc.; Attune Systems; Callixa; Zomanex(TM); Itellidot; Xtegra; Layer 7 Technologies; Lifeline Technologies; Aryx Therapeutics; Managed Objects; Sun Cobalt; Speedchain Networks; Hall Kinion; Cambric; Rheodyne and CV Therapeutics, among others.

Sounds cool. But wait! At 4:49 PM, here comes a correction. Here's what it says:

Fifth graph, fourth sentence should be changed to omit reference to Managed Objects and for clarification separates into two sentences to denote Shoreline Venture Management directors' independent private equity investments. The sentences should read: The company's portfolio includes Alacritech Inc.; Attune Systems; Callixa; ZomanexT; Itellidot; Xtegra; Layer 7 Technologies; Lifeline Technologies; Aryx Therapeutics and Speedchain Networks. Shoreline Venture Management directors' independent private equity investments have included: Sun Cobalt, Hall Kinion, Cambric, Rheodyne and CV Therapeutics among others.

Don't know about you, but I feel guilty just reading this. Behind all this setting-straight-the-record slouches some poor schmo with cheeks aflame. Someone didn't read the fine print right. Someone let a press release go without Barry X's blessing. And poor Managed Objects! What's with that?

It's too painful to think about. Let it be a lesson to us all.
