CA Grabs Concord

Computer Associates International Inc. (CA) (NYSE: CA) will spend $350 million in cash to acquire Concord Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: CCRD), in the latest move by an IT supplier to widen the scope of its management capabilities (see CA to Acquire Concord).

Concord is CA's second big acquisition of a management firm in six months. In January, the company spent $93 million in cash to acquire Aprisma Management Technologies (see Concord to Buy Aprisma for $93M). And CA COO Jeff Clarke says CA will continue to look for technologies it can buy for less than it would cost to build them.

CA wants to broaden the scope of its Unicenter systems management product to encompass network management, particularly in the telecom services area, where Concord has monitoring and reporting expertise. "Increasingly, customers want systems and network managed together," said Clarke on a conference call with analysts today.
