Mobile WiMAX is expected to get its U.S. introduction early next year in Michigan by broadband provider Arialink. The broadband connectivity provider plans to use equipment provided by Samsung Telecommunications America.
In an announcement Friday, Arialink said it expects the deployment in Muskegon County will be the first commercial mobile WiMAX installation in North America. Arialink noted that Samsung has already built out mobile WiMAX deployments in Europe and Asia.
Financial support for the deployment is provided by the state of Michigan as part of its Digital Divide Investment Program.
"The regional deployment of Mobile WiMAX will help strengthen the momentum toward ongoing development of WiMAX services throughout the U.S. and beyond," said Jeong Han Kim, president of the Samsung unit, in a statement.
Samsung has been testing the technology in recent months.
