Verizon Wireless Launches Global E-Mail Service

Verizon Wireless Friday launched a service that enables subscribers who use a special phone to get their e-mail in more than 50 countries.

The cellular operator's GlobalEMail service works with the Samsung i830 phone it launched last week. That phone works both on Verizon's CDMA network in the U.S. and on GSM networks, which is the dominant technology in Europe and many other parts of the world.

"With GlobalEmail, Verizon Wireless business customers and mobile professionals can respond to messages and stay connected, even if work requires them to be in different countries around the globe," Jim Straight, vice president of wireless Internet and data for Verizon Wireless, said in a statement.

The company said unlimited access to the service in the U.S., Canada and Western Europe costs $64.99 a month. Use in other countries in which it is available costs three cents per kilobyte. The company said it also has a pay-per-use pricing plan available for occasional travelers.
