Report: WiMAX Will Generate $53 Billion In Revenue

The looming global rollout of WiMAX will push its way into the 3G market and generate $53 billion in mobile revenue in 2011, according to a report released Monday by TelecomView.

The market research firm said it expects $65 billion will be generated in mobile capital expenditures before 2011.

"We forecast that WiMAX will account for at least half of the broadband mobile service revenue in North America," said Ian Cox, TelecomView principal analyst, in a statement. "While we also believe that it will be a key technology in Asia, we think that it will lag behind 3G technologies in Europe given the investment being made in 3G and HSDPA."

TelecomView also noted that major 3G service providers including Sprint, Korea Telecom, and NTT DoCoMo are interested in the benefits of WiMAX as evidenced by the WiMAX trials they are conducting.
