NAC tends to be deployed by large enterprises that can manage the cost and complexity of switch-based solutions. Now Vernier Networks is launching a NAC appliance aimed at small enterprises and branch offices. The EdgeWall 8100 is an eight-port, 1U device that gets deployed inline to enforce policy compliance, provide identity-based access control and quarantine noncompliant hosts. It uses a SmartScan agent to assess managed and unmanaged hosts and to provide user-driven remediation. It also includes an IPS engine to prevent attacks. Admins can manage multiple appliances with the Vernier Networks Control Server. --Andrew Conry-Murray
