Polycom Aims New Videoconferencing System at the Desktop

While IT departments might not be able to outfit every desktop with Polycom's new videoconferencing system, the vendor hopes that at $3000 for a business-quality setup, they might be willing to deploy a few systems in the executive suites.

Videoconferencing is but one part of a unified communications approach:

"Unified communications encompasses virtually every piece of collaboration software, starting with VoIP, IM, Web conferencing and videoconferencing, and in many instances adding e-mail, data portals and group collaboration. For enterprise IT groups looking to keep critical communications systems intact, making the wrong choice could have a negative impact on competitiveness and product acquisition cycles for years to come."
