VPN vendor Aventail Monday announced an SSL VPN product for smartphones and PDAs.

The company said its Aventail Mobile product will work with devices based on the Palm, Windows Mobile, Symbian and BlackBerry platforms. The vendor said that the software uses a single gateway and the same user interface for all mobile devices as well as PCs and laptops. The mobile version of the product also uses the company's ability to distribute policies to remote devices.

In addition, Aventail said its mobile product also can be set to only give mobile devices access to applications that are appropriate for that specific type of device. The company used as an example the fact that clicking on a link to e-mail using the software would connect to the Outlook Mobile Access client instead of Outlook Web Access, which would be appropriate on laptops.

The mobile client will be available in the fourth quarter, according to the company.
