Cognio this week unveiled Spectrum Expert 3.1, an update of its wireless spectrum analyzer. The new version can advise IT managers on how to respond to interference on their wireless LANs.

Spectrum Expert 3.1 works by delivering data on the interfering device's spectrum characteristics, the expected effect on network performance and signal strength. To help network managers expedite their response, the analyzer provides a recommended solution to limit or entirely prevent the interfering device's impact on the wireless LAN.

Spectrum Expert 3.1 also includes an instant-replay feature that lets network administrators review live spectrum for diagnostic purposes. And the analyzer offers a "Real-Time Spectrum Snapshot," which displays statistics about interference and spectrum use.

Industry observers say that though this release is largely an incremental upgrade of the Cognio analyzer, it does give IT managers a valuable tool for preserving the performance of their wireless LANs.Analysts note that the increasing complexity of Wi-Fi networks combined with the growing number of devices that can interfere with performance is compounding the challenge of maintaining acceptable wireless LAN performance. Cognio's Spectrum Expert helps IT managers get "closer to total hands-off cognitive Wi-Fi management," said Paul DeBeasi, senior analyst with Burton Group's Network and Telecom Strategies Service.

Spectrum Expert 3.1 is shipping now.
