Juniper Networks announced that Guangdong Telecom has expanded ADSL services to more than two million subscribers using its E-Series edge routing platform.

Serving southern China, including Canton, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, Guangdong Telecom is the largest broadband service provider in China. It is in the fifth and largest phase of a large-scale deployment of broadband Internet access for business and consumer subscribers.

"With its extensive and growing customer base, Guangdong Telecom requires a routing platform that enables the delivery of sophisticated broadband services with increased levels of performance, reliability and scale, while also lowering operating expenses," Juniper vice president for greater China Eric Yu said in a statement. "Since the E-series has performed so well in the Guangdong Telecom network, we are pleased that they have once again chosen us to expand their network to meet increased customer demand for ADSL services."

China already has one of the highest rates of xDSL penetration in the world, and broadband adoption seems likely to continue to rise. According to Gartner Dataquest, the number of xDSL users in China grew 600% in two years, to reach 24.2 million subscribers in 2004. Gartner Dataquest predicts that the number of users will reach 43.3 million by the end of 2008.
