Onaro Inc. said Monday that it's working with Cisco to put its SANscreen storage management software on Cisco's MDS 9000 line of network switches. The agreement ensures interoperability and alignment of technical roadmaps, according to Onaro.

Using the SANscreen predictive management software and MDS switches will enable customers to more easily build virtual storage area networks (VSANs), and to administer, build and manage SANs without adding complexity

"Simplifying SAN management is integral to reducing the total cost of owning storage resources," said Ed Chapman, senior director of product management for the Cisco MDS 9000, in a statement. The combination solutions is well suited for applications such as SAN consolidation, business continuity and utility computing, Chapman added.

As much as 80 percent of all SAN problems result from changes, according to Onaro. SANscreen's deterministic root-cause analysis identifies and fixes violations that stray from policies, preventing errors and vulnerabilities.

"Storage management technology that provides proactive impact analysis of SAN changes and advice on addressing these changes helps to eliminate storage downtime while improving staff productivity," said Ray Paquet, vice president at Gartner Inc., in a statement.
