Verari Systems on Tuesday launched the new Octet 8-Way AMD Opteron processor-based SMP server. The product's design delivers large SMP capabilities to the x86 application base, competitive with proprietary RISC architectures. The Octet 8-Way server supports eight AMD Opteron 800 Series processors, 64 GB of memory, and eight SATA hard-drives

According to a company spokesman, the Octet's 64GB RAM capacity is especially suited for applications requiring large memory such as Electronic Design Automation. Although the Opteron 800 processor was designed specifically for 8-way servers, it has been used primarily in 4-way systems. Verari's introduction offers AMD64 technology in a high-performance, scalable 8-way SMP design.

The Octet 8-Way server will begin shipping next month. Prices start at $23,000. Verari Systems will display the product at Supercomputing 2004 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, today through November 11.
