Toshiba Releases IP-Based, PoE Security Camera

Toshiba has introduced a Power over Ethernet (PoE) IP camera that allows business managers and homeowners to use network-attached cameras, their networks, and the Internet for security monitoring.

The Toshiba WB02-KIT3-8 Camera Kit includes PoE, two-way audio, an SD card slot, and built-in motion detection. The camera has an MSRP of $599 and includes the camera, a 1/3-inch 3.0-8.0mm Al lens, a 24VAC 20VA plug-in transformer, and a 6- inch universal camera mount for indoor mounting applications.

Because it uses PoE, the camera requires only a single CAT 5 or above cable to deliver both communications and power, reducing installation costs because it eliminates the need to install electrical wiring or power outlets. PoE can also assure continuous surveillance in a power outage by carrying battery backed up uninterrupted power via the LAN.

A card put into the built-in SD Card slot records on-motion activity at the camera. After an incident, the user can take out the SD Card and plays it back on a computer to view captured video at one frame per second.
