Solar Storms Could Dampen Cell Phone Calls

Five years from now, you'll probably want to punch anyone humming the Brady Bunch's "It's A Sunshine Day." Scientists at NASA are predicting that 2012 will be the year for some serious solar activity: sunspots and flares the likes of which have not been seen since the late 50's.

You remember the 50's, right? No cell phones or wireless networks. No celestial parking lot full of satellites channeling television or radio shows to houses and cars. In other words, don't be surprised if between now and 2012, we start to see some serious interruptions to communications networks.

On the plus side, there will probably be more auroras in the night sky to enjoy. You just won't be able to text message anyone about them.
