Plagued by accounting scandals and management upheaval in recent months, Nortel got some good news Thursday from a report that noted it is the leading supplier in the growing worldwide IP PBX market.

“Nortel leads the recovering North American IP PBX market,” said Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst at Infonetics Research, in a statement. “Avaya and Cisco are engaged in an epic battle for second place, with Cisco steadily encroaching on Avaya’s leadership position.”

The overall market is roaring ahead, totaling $2.1 billion in the third quarter. The increase was 17 percent more than a year ago and 7 percent higher than the previous quarter. In its Enterprise Telephony report on IP PBX, Infonetics said market growth is fueled by the widespread move to VoIP and by an improving economy.

Machowinski said hybrid PBXs made up most of the IP PBX growth in the most recent quarter while pure IP revenue came in with just one percent growth.
