Nortel Buys Pingtel for Unified Communications Software Know-How

Nortel is broadening its reach in the unified communications market with the acquisition of software maker Pingtel.Pingtel, a subsidiary of mobile solutions provider Bluesocket, will provide new software capabilities to Toronto-based Nortel's enterprise unified communications portfolio -- starting with Nortel's Software Communication System 500 (SCS500), which includes such collaborative applications as video and voice conferencing and unified messaging -- along with additional research and development capabilities. Pingtel employees will be integrated into Nortel's Billerica, Mass. facilities.
""We believe that bringing Pingtel's critical R&D capabilities in-house will enable us to further develop software-based solutions," said a Nortel GM in a statement. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.Ottawa Business Journal
