New Service Lets Wireless VoIP Providers Offer E911 Emergency Calls

Intrado Inc. has announced a new service that will allow wireless broadband voice over IP (VoIP) providers to offer 9-1-1 services in compliance with the recent Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandate.

Designed to allow providers to comply with the mandate without compromising wireless VoIP features and functionality, Intrado says that the V9-1-1SM Mobility Service will let them position their services as primary line replacement. The solution is designed to accommodate each jurisdiction's 9-1-1 regulations, while supporting static, mobile and out-of-area phone numbers.

Intrado provides 911 integration by transmitting routing instructions for the local 911 service through the wireless VoIP provider's modem. The service redirects VoIP 911 calls over the existing wireline service, and offers live call-center support 24 hours a day.

"Intrado continues to extend its expertise in 9-1-1 services to support expanding new technologies," Intrado co-founder and chief technology officer Stephen Meer said in a statement. "By providing 9-1-1 solutions for communication technologies like wireless broadband VoIP, we are helping subscribers to fully utilize all the capabilities of these new services."
