Netgear has released the ProSafe 48 Port Gigabit Smart Switch GS748T, a gigabit switch with optional fiber connectivity and switch management features, targeted at small to medium-sized businesses.

The switch uses a browser-based interface that offers network management tools, so that companies without a fully SNMP-capable network can take advantage of features including performance monitoring, port configuration, VLANs, port trunking, and Class of Service (CoS), the firm says.

The GS748T provides 48 10/100/1000 ports in a 1U package, and so it is suitable for high-density rack mounting. It works out of the box as an unmanaged switch, and management features can be enabled on an as-needed basis. It offers optional fiber connectivity through four hot-swappable SFP GBIC slots.

"The integration of a host of key management features with high-density, high-performance, cost-effective unmanaged switches enables us to deliver a lightly managed solution as an affordable alternative to a larger managed switch, a perfect match to meet the cost and performance requirements of growing small- and medium-sized businesses," Peter Newton, NETGEAR Product Line Manager, said in a statement.
